Immerse yourself in the power of nature and art of Catalonia

The diversity of the region around Girona shows itself at its best with our Grand Tour of 7 stages. The Costa Brava, Figueres and Dali, the mountain lake of Banyoles and… the volcanoes around Olot. No dry, gray volcanoes, but an enormously fertile ground, where the craters are hidden between the trees. Don’t worry about the activity of these volcanoes, but enjoy this beautiful nature reserve: ‘Zona Volcanico de la Garrotxa’

Highlights along the way

The tour starts with the Ruta del Carrilet. The Carrilet route was built on the foundations of an old train track. At the end of the 1990s, the track was converted into a cycle path, connecting Olot, Girona and Sant Feliu de Guixols. The route is well signposted and passes through six villages, some stations of which have been converted into restaurants and/or bars. An extra plus of the route is that the paths are fairly flat and have little difference in height.

Must-see places include the Volcanoes of the Garrotxa. Around Olot you will find the ‘Parque Natural de la Zona Volcanica de la Garrotxa’. The park is unique on the Spanish mainland and is home to several volcanoes. Near the village of Santa Pau are the two largest: Volca Croscat and Santa Margarida. The volcanoes are no longer active. Sporadically, mini-earthquakes still occur in this area – not noticeable to the population. The volcanic park is now a popular place for many people to walk and view the craters (still visible).

In Banyoles you will find the largest natural lake in Catalonia. Fresh water constantly flows into the lake from underground springs arising from the La Garrotxa volcanic area. This lake is also an important place as a sports location. Not only rowers, but also swimmers and triathletes like to train here. For runners (but of course also walkers) the path around the lake offers a beautiful round

Both routes have their own challenge
